Tall, balding English character actor, good at feigning offence, and best remembered as the vicar in the long-running Dad's Army TV series, a role he repeated in two spin-off films. The only child of a north London vicar, he was a regular in films from the early 1950s: Derby Day (1952), The Story of Gilbert and Sullivan (1953), One Good Turn (1954), The Glass Cage (1955), The Extra Day (1956), The One That Got Away (1957), Bachelor of Hearts (1958), Jazz Boat (1959), Inn for Trouble (1960), The Bulldog Breed (1960), The Dock Brief/Trial and Error (1962), Just for Fun (1963), Hide and Seek (1964), The Deadly Affair (1966), Robbery (1967), Headline Hunters (1968), Atlantic Wall (1970), Dad's Army (1971), Countdown to Danger (1973), One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing (1975), Jabberwocky (1977), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), The 'Human' Factor (1979), Oh! Heavenly Dog (1980), Island of Adventure (1981), Phew! (1994), Tanner (2007), The Echoes of Empire (2011), Decline of an Empire (2014) and Dad's Army (2016, remake), his last.
