Peter Yates

Director

Born - 24 July 1929, Aldershot, Hampshire, UK
Died - 9 January 2011

British director with full, florid complexion and fluffy fair hair who often combined critical and commercial success in his work, compiling an impressive record between 1967 and 1988 before tailing away in his later years. After beginning with a Cliff Richard musical, Summer Holiday (1962) and the eccentrically hilarious One-Way Pendulum (1964). Yates moved into mainstream cinema with a diversity of always pacy, popular movies with characters to whom an audience could respond: Robbery (1967), Bullitt (1968, his biggest success), John and Mary (1969), Murphy's War (1970), The Hot Rock (1972), The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Deep (1977), Breaking Away (1979, a first Oscar nomination), Eyewitness (1981), The Dresser (1983, a second Oscar nomination), Eleni (1985), Suspect (1987) and the House on Carroll Street (1988). Subsequent films were less successful and his last theatrical feature, was, appropriately, Curtain Call in 1999.
