Tall, bespectacled, triple Emmy-winning American director with a mop of light hair. Mostly associated with TV, where he was principally responsible for the innovative approach of the cult cop series Hill Street Blues, he also made The Cage, pilot for the Star Trek series, in 1964 (shown 1966) and a number of films, including several Disney comedies: Guns in the Heather (1968), The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Then Came Bronson (1970), The Barefoot Executive (1971), Scandalous John (1971), Now You See Him, Now You Don't (1972), The Blue Knight (1973), The Ultimate Thrill (1974), Hot Lead and Cold Feet (1978), Night of the Juggler (1980), Underground Aces (1981), Up the Creek (1984), On the Edge (1987), Turbulence (1997) and the short Where Do the Balloons Go? (2009). Survived by Adrienne, his wife of 66 years, he died from natural causes.
