Michael Ansara

Born - 15 April 1922, Syria
Died - 31 July 2013

Dark, swarthy, all-purpose Syrian-born US portrayer of villains. Many a heroine quailed before his merciless sneer, as he played a long series of American Indians and exotic bearded and moustachioed bad guys in colourful adventure yarns. His oval face became even more familiar in the late 1950s as Cochise in the TV series of Broken Arrow. Interrupting military service to make his film debut in Action in Arabia (1944), he later appeared in Intrigue (1947), Outpost in Morocco (1949), Kim (1950), Only the Valiant (1951), Yankee Buccaneer (1952), Julius Caesar (1953), The Robe (1953), Sign of the Pagan (1954), Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955), Diane (1956), The Tomahawk and the Cross (1956), The Tall Stranger (1957), The Comancheros (1961), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Texas Across the River (1966), The Heroin Gang (1968), Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969), Stand Up and Be Counted (1972), The Bears and I (1974), The Manitou (1978), The Guns and the Fury (1981), Access Code (1984), Assassination (1987), Border Shootout (1990), The Long Road Home (1999), his last, and dozens of others. He married actresses Jean Byron and Barbara Eden, first and second of three wives. Died from Alzheimer's complications.
