Donald Sinden

Actor

Born - 9 October 1923, Plymouth, Devon, England
Died - 11 September 2014

Dark-haired, fruity-voiced, sometimes moustachioed, hearty English actor, solidly built and popular as a movie leading man in the 1950s, when he mixed ingenuous heroes with lovable rogues. Later, in between star character roles, he built up a formidable, twinkling-eyed reputation in the theatre. After a blink-and-you-miss-it film debut in Portrait from Life (1948), Sinden became a star in his next film, The Cruel Sea (1952). A busy decade followed: You Know What Sailors Are (1953), Doctor in the House (1954), Simba (1954), Above Us the Waves (1955), An Alligator Named Daisy (1955), Eyewitness (1956), Tiger in the Smoke (1956), Doctor at Large (1957), The Captain's Table (1958), Rockets Galore (1958), Operation Bullshine (1959) and The Siege of Sidney Street (1960). Later appearances were always distinctive but less frequent: Twice Round the Daffodils (1962), Decline and Fall...of a birdwatcher (1968), Villain (1971), The National Health (1973), That Lucky Touch (1975), Helicopter (1981), The Children (1990), The Accidental Detective (2001) and the short Blowing Dandelions (2012), his last. He died from prostate cancer.
