An iconic 'B' western heroine, on the tallish side, with slender figure and dark, curly hair. Discovered for films at 14, she was in small roles until the early 1940s, when hour-long black-and-white oaters became her stock in trade. After the genre vanished, she kept her career going right up to the age of 90: Wells Fargo (1937), That Certain Age (1938), Man About Town (1939), All This, and Heaven Too (1940), Back Street (1941), Sleepytime Gal (1942), Girls in Chains (1943), Tucson Raiders (1944(, Code of the Prairie (1944), Utah (1945), The Vampire's Ghost (1945), California Gold Rush (1946), Alias Billy the Kid (1946), Son of Zorro (1947), Trail to San Antone (1947), Frontier Revenge (1948), Ride, Ryder, Ride! (1949), Cody of the Pony Express (1950), The Pride of Maryland (1951), Kansas Territory (1952), then much TV until When the Clock Strikes (1961), Gun Street (1961), The Clown and the Kid (1962), The Way West (1967), The Animals (1970), Pickup on 101 (1972), Terror in the Wax Museum (1973), White House Madness (1975), Black Oak Conspiracy (1977), Beyond Evil (1980), Jumpin' at the Boneyard (1992), Hollywood - It's a Dog's Life (2004), The Runaways (2010) and That's My Boy (2012), her last - a career spanning 75 years. Her first husband was cowboy star Don 'Red' Barry, her second character actor Buck Young; they were together 47 years until his death in 2000. Stewart (born Peggy O'Rourke - she took her stepfather's surname) died from natural causes a week before her 96th birthday, having been a guest at western conventions into her nineties.
