David Koff

Director

Born - 24 September 1939, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Died - 6 March 2014

Tall, pony-tailed director of documentaries that were largely about disenfranchised people, oppressed minorities and others whom Koff saw as not getting a fair crack of life's whip. His most famous film was one he only co-directed, People of the Wind (1976), about a tribe of nomads in Iran. Narrated by James Mason, it was nominated for an Oscar. Solo directorial efforts included White Man's Country and Mau Mau (both 1970), Blacks Britannica (1978), Occupied Palestine (1981), Windows (2002) and The New Haven Raids (2008), his last. Suffering greatly from depression in his last years, he committed suicide.
