Francoise Arnoul

Actress

Born - 3 June 1931, Constantine, Algeria (then French Algeria)
Died - 20 July 2021

Dark-haired, full-lipped, doe-eyed, gamine Franco-Algerian actress, raised in Morocco, and almost always in provocative roles. Born Annette Gautsch, she was in films as a pert teenager, and smouldered throughout the 1950s in comedy (often opposite Fernandel) and drama alike, without quite becoming an international star: Let's Go to Paris (1949), Sin and Desire (1949), The Most Beautiful Girl in the World (1951), Forbidden Fruit (1952), Les Compagnes de la Nuit (1953), The Lovers of Toledo (1953), The Bed (1954), The Sheep Has Five Legs (1954), French Cancan (1955), Paris, Palace Hotel (1956), Therese Etienne (1958), La Chatte (1958), Le Testament d'Orphee (1959), The Season for Love (1961), The Devil and the 10 Commandments (1962), Daggers Drawn (1963), Lucky Jo (1964), The Sleeping Car Murders (1965), Le Dimanche de la Vie (1967) and The Little Theatre of Jean Renoir (1970). After a break, she returned in character roles: Violette & Francois (1977). Black Out (1977), Bobo Jacco (1979), Vivre Ma Vie (1982), Night Patrol (1984), The Gold-diggers (1986), Nuit Docile (1987), Voir l'Elephant (1990), Les Annees Campagne (1992), Heavy Weather (1995), After Sex (1997), Merci Pour le Geste (2000), Le Voyageur de la Toussaint (2007), On the Shore (2011) and Le Cancre (2016), her last.
