Nicol Williamson

Actor

Born - 14 September 1936, Hamilton, Scotland, UK
Died - 16 December 2011

Big, aggressive Scottish actor and singer with thinning fair hair and large, booming personality, a formidable presence on stage, but only at his best in the cinema in movies of the late 1960s when his sexual bull on the rampage became high fashion. He can supposedly be spotted in a walk-on in The Iron Petticoat (1956), but his first cinema success was in the high-profile short The Six-Sided Triangle in 1963. He became a marketable star in The Bofors Gun (1968), Inadmissable Evidence (1968), Hamlet (1969), Laughter in the Dark (1969) and The Reckoning (1969), but thereafter his roles gave him few more chances to be a dominant force: The Jerusalem File (1971), The Monk (1972), The Wilby Conspiracy (1974), Robin and Marian (1976), The Seven Per Cent Solution (1976), The Goodbye Girl (1977), The Cheap Detective (1978), The Human Factor (1979), Excalibur (1981), Return to Oz (1985), Black Widow (1987), Apt Pupil (1987), The Exorcist III (1990), The Hour of the Pig (1993), The Wind in the Willows (1996) and Spawn (1997), his last. He spent his latter years on the musical side of his career, before dying from cancer of the aesophagus.
