Award-winning editor who later directed a few 'B' movies, before moving into management with 20th Century-Fox in the 1960s. After retiring from production in the late 1980s, he turned his hand to writing, having a play performed while in his nineties. His editing credits include Norse Edith Cavell (1939), Sunny (1941), Nocturne (1946), Follow Me Quietly (1949), High Noon (1952, for which he won an Oscar), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) and Cleopatra (1963). He also directed the films The Tall Texan (1953), the documentary The Cowboy (1954), Blonde Bait (1956), Hell Ship Mutiny (1957), Apache Warrior (1957) and action sequences on The Big Gamble (1961). He died at 102 after having heart problems.
