Brown-haired, jut-jawed Scottish actress with soothing, motherly presence, a favourite of director Franco Zeffirelli. A stalwart of stage and TV, her films included The Castiglioni Brothers (1958), Romeo and Juliet (1968), Staircase (1969), Goodbye, Mr Chips (1969), Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny & Girly (1969, as axe-wielding Nanny), 10 Rillington Place (1970), All the Way Up (1970), Young Winston (1971), Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? (1971), Bequest to the Nation (1973), Wish You Were Here (1987), Young Toscanini (1988), Getting It Right (1989) and Sparrow (1993), her last. Married actor/director Oliver Neville in 1964; he died in 2021.
