Slight, diffident, doleful-looking American comedian with thinning brown hair, whose droll, deadpan delivery and deliberate stammer sold millions of records in the USA alone. He began his film career as a straight actor in Hell is for Heroes! in 1962, but subsequent movie appearances were mainly comic cameos: Hot Millions (1968), Catch-22 (1970), Cold Turkey (1971), the voice of Bernard in The Rescuers (1977), Little Miss Marker (1980), Bernard again in The Rescuers Down Under (1990), In & Out (1997), Papa Elf in Elf (2003) and Horrible Bosses (2011), his last. He won an Emmy for his work as Arthur Jeffries in the TV series The Big Bang Theory. His wife Virginia died in 2023 after 60 years of marriage.
