Charlotte Mitchell

Actress

Born - 23 July 1926, Ipswich, Suffolk, England
Died - 2 May 2012

Round-faced, apple-cheeked, sympathetic-looking brunette actress. A busy bee in the post-war cinema for two decades, her looks turned motherly early on; she later worked prolifically on TV and became a respected poet. The mother of actors Dominic Guard and Philip Guard, and novelist Candy Guard, Charlotte (born Edna) Mitchell made her screen debut in The Romantic Age/Naughty Arlette (1949) and was often improbably cast as teenage tearaways: The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950), The Man in the White Suit (1951), Laughter in Paradise (1951), Lady Godiva Rides Again (1951), Hindle Wakes (1952), Curtain Up! (1952), Street Corner (1953), The Story of Gilbert and Sullivan (1953), Time Bomb/Terror on a Train (1953), One Way Out (1955) and Lost (1956). From the late 1950s, she moved easily into character roles: The Bridal Path (1959), Dentist in the Chair (1960), Nearly a Nasty Accident (1961), Dentist on the Job (1961) and many, sometimes Dickensian, TV roles. Later film work includes Satan's Skin/Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Jim, the World's Greatest (1976), The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) and The First Kangaroos (1988), her last, though she continued acting on TV until 1999.
