Jill Clayburgh

Actress

Born - 30 April 1941, New York City, USA
Died - 5 November 2010

Tawny-haired actress with liquid tones, capable of deeply-felt performances, but also with a warm and wicked sense of comedy - twice Oscar-nominated, for her performances in An Unmarried Woman (1977) and Starting Over (1979), a period when her film popularity was at its height. Her film debut in The Wedding Party (1966) wasn't seen until 1969 and, despite roles in The Telephone Book (1971) and Portnoy's Complaint (1972), it was not until she stole scenes from the stars in The Thief Who Came to Dinner (1973) that she began attract mainstream Hollywood roles. She was also in The Terminal Man (1974), Silver Streak (1976), Semi-Tough (1977), La Luna (1979), It's My Turn (1980) and First Monday in October (1981), but poor choices of roles after that resulted in a career downswing. Later credits include Hanna K (1983), Where Are the Children? (1985), Beyond the Ocean (1990), Naked in New York (1993), Fools Rush In (1997), Never Again (2001), Running with Scissors (2006) and Love and Other Drugs (2010), her last. A long relationship with actor Al Pacino eventually ended, and she married playwright David Rabe in 1979. She died at 69 from chronic leukemia.
