Henry Gibson

Mild-looking, diminutive American comedian and actor, who won his first fame carrying a flower and reciting a poem on the smash TV comedy series Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In in 1968. Born James Bateman, he was a child actor who later became a prolific TV career, developing the character of Henry Gibson (a play on playwright Henrik Ibsen), which he soon adopted as his own. In addition to his TV fame (which included a long stint on Boston Legal, he appeared with distinction in a number of films, latterly often in creepy roles. Among the movies were The Nutty Professor (1963), Kiss Me, Stupid (1964), Charlotte's Web (1972, as the voice of Wilbur), The Long Goodbye (1973), Nashville (1975), The Blues Brothers (1980), The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981), The 'burbs (1989), Wedding Crashers (2005) and Big Stan (2007), his last. He died from cancer.
