Dark-haired actress, singer and dancer, who appeared in a few Warners musicals of the early 1950s - notably as Katie Brown in Calamity Jane - as Allyn McLerie, before launching a career as a character actress under her full name in the following decade. The daughter of a pilot who died before she was born, she made her Broadway debut in the 1940s, and entered films, perhaps appropriately, in Words and Music (1948). Subsequent credits include Where's Charley? (1952), Calamity Jane (1953), The Desert Song (1953), Phantom of the Rue Morgue (1954), Battle Cry (1955), 40 Pounds of Trouble (1962), They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), The Reivers (1969), Monte Walsh (1970), The Cowboys (1972), The Way We Were (1973), All the President's Men (1976) and many more. Her last appearance came in Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow (1994), opposite her character actor (second) husband George Gaynes, to whom she was married for more than 60 years. He died in 2016. Her first husband was the composer Adolph Green. She died from Alzheimer's Disease.
