Nicholas Parsons

Actor/TV and radio personality

Born - 10 October 1923, Grantham, Lincolnshire, England
Died - 28 January 2020

Genial, fair-haired, fruitily light-voiced, boyishly good-looking, latterly bespectacled English performer of cheerful aspect, who began as an actor, but became best-known as the host or quiz inquisitor of countless light-hearted shows on TV and radio, notably Sale of the Century and especially the long-running Just a Minute. After repertory experience in Kent, and a lengthy spell as resident comedian at the Windmill Theatre, he entered films in Master of Bankdam (1947), but it was the fifties that brought him to the fore, often in light comedy roles: To Dorothy, a Son (1954), Simon and Laura (1955), An Alligator Named Daisy (1955), The Long Arm (1956), Eyewitness (1956), Brothers in Law (1956), Happy is the Bride! (1957), Too Many Crooks (1958), Carlton-Browne of the FO (1958), Upstairs and Downstairs (1959), Doctor in Love (1960) and Carry on Regardless (1961). Subsequently, he squeezed in a few more films in between increasing TV commitments: Every Day's a Holiday (1964), Murder Ahoy (1964), The Wrong Box (1966), Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River(1968), Danger Point (1971), Spy Story (1976), Mr Jolly Lives Next Door (1987) and Lady Godiva (2007), his last. Actress Denise Bryer was the first of his two wives.
