Carlos Saura

Director

Born - 4 January 1932, Huesca, Spain
Died - 10 February 2023

Balding, bespectacled Spanish director, the father of modern Spanish cinema. Elements of Saura's innovative work are later reflected in the films of such directors as Pedro Almodovar and Bigas Luna. While some of his movies are noteworthy for their daring, vivid use of colour and symbolism, Saura also proved adept at dramas of realism that exposed flaws in the prevailing social conditions. Born Carlos Saura Atares, his films included Cuenca (1958), The Hooligans (1960), Llanto por un Bandido (1964), The Hunt (1966), Peppermint Frappe (1967), The Honeycomb (1969), El Jardin de las Delicias (1970), Ana and the Wolves (1973), Cousin Angelika (1974), Cria Cuevros/Raise Ravens (1975), Elisa, Vida Mia (1976), Blindfold (1978), Mother Turns One Hundred (1979), Blood Wedding (1981), Antonieta (1982), Carmen (1983), The Stilts(1984), El Amore Brujo (1986), El Dorado (1988), Ay! Carmela (1990), Outrage! (1992), Flamenco (1994), Taxi (1996), Tango (1998), Goya in Bordeaux (1999), Salome (2002), The 7th Day (2004), Iberia (2005), I, Don Giovanni (2009), Argentina (2015), The King of All the World (2020) and Las Paredes Habian (2022), his last (at 90!). Married three times (he had seven children), Saura also had a lengthy relationship with the actress Geraldine Chaplin. He died from respiratory failure.
