Shaggy-haired, bespectacled English director, an Old Etonian who laboured in making commercials and short films (the first was A...is for Apple in 1963) for 20 years before producer David Puttnam gave him a chance to direct a feature film - Chariots of Fire (1981), which won him an Oscar nomination. Other credits include the documentary Fangio: Life at 300 Miles an Hour (1980) and the features Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), Revolution (1985), Lost Angels (1989), Lumiere and Company (1995), My Life So Far (1999),I Dreamed of Africa (2000), Rupture - A Matter of Life OR Death (2011) and Finding Altamira (2016), his last. Survived by his (second) wife, actress Maryam d'Abo, he died 'after a short illness'.
