William A Fraker

Cinematographer

Born - 29 September 1923, Los Angeles, California, USA
Died - 31 May 2010

A master of warmly colourful, expansive cinematography, Fraker was nominated five times for an Oscar but never won. He was also three times President of the American Society of Cinematographers between 1979 and 1992. His film career began in 1961 with the inaptly titled Forget Me Not, but he was soon in demand for colour camerawork at a time when black and white was still around: Incubus (1965), The Fox (1967), Bullitt (1968), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Paint Your Wagon (1969), The Day of the Dolphin (1973), Gator (1976), Looking for Mr Goodbar (1977), Heaven Can Wait (1978), 1941 (1979), Sharky's Machine (1981), WarGames (1983), Murphy's Romance (1985), Baby Boom (1987), The Freshman (1990), Tombstone (1993), The Island of Dr Moreau (1996), Rules of Engagement (2000) and Waking Up in Reno, his last. Fraker, who died from cancer, also directed three films: Monte Walsh (1970), A Reflection of Fear (1973) and The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981).
