Sleek, dark-haired, flamboyantly bisexual Austrian actor with piercing gaze and steely expression who played beautiful but sometimes evil young men in his early appearances. For a few years, he was the epitome of gilded youth. Later career was blighted by drug and alcohol problems. Born Helmut Steinberger, he made his film debut with a small role in The Witches (1966), but it was his performance in Luchino Visconti's The Damned (1969) that brought him to international prominence. Later credits include Dorian Gray (1970), The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970), Love Me Strangely (1971), Ludwig (1973), Conversation Piece (1974), The Romantic Englishwoman (1975), Salon Kitty (1976), The Biggest Battle (1978), Eroina (1980), Femmes (1983), Code Name: Emerald (1985), Faceless (1988), The Godfather Part III (1990), Adelaide (1992), Ludwig 1881 (1993), Ultimo Taglio (1997), Unter den Palmen (1999), Honey Baby (2004), Initiation (2009), Murder Sisters (2011), The Devil's Violinist (2013), Saint Laurent (2014), Timeless (2016), Liberty (2018) and Portae Infernales (2019), his last. Longtime companion of Visconti until the director's death in 1976, he later married (and divorced) actress Francesca Guidato.
