Very slim, dark-haired American actress with huge, bird-like, brown eyes, long, thin nose and thick, if attractive lips - an expert at nervousness and insecurity. Often seen in films by Robert Altman, and especially good in his Three Women (1977), she was perfectly cast as Olive Oyl in Popeye (1980), but too little seen thereafter: Brewster McCloud (1970), McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971), Thieves Like Us (1974), Nashville (1975), Buffalo Bill and the Indians (1976), Annie Hall (1977), The Shining (1980), Time Bandits (1981), Roxanne (1987), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), Rocket Man (1997), Talos the Mummy (1997), The 4th Floor (1999), Manna from Heaven (2002) and The Forest Hills (2023), her last. She died from diabetes complications.
