Fair-haired, clean-cut, blue-eyed, beefy American actor who became a household name after starring in the TV western series Bronco. But he never managed to impose a personality on his subsequent movie roles and, after briefly being jailed for drug trafficking in Spain, became a self-styled minister in 1979, touring America with Bible readings until he ceased active ministry in 1984. In between, he continued to act. Born Orison Hungerford (later legally changed) and raised in Texas, he was busy in films for his Bronco studio, Warner Brothers, from the late 1950s: As Young As We Are (1958), Last Train from Gun Hill (1959), The Chapman Report (1961), P T 109 (1962), Merrill's Marauders (1962), Wall of Noise (1963), Battle of the Bulge (1965), Custer of the West (1966), Berserk (1967), One Step to Hell (1968), The Last Rampage (1970), Acquasanta Joe (1971), Drums of Vengeance (1974), Rooster: Spurs of Death! (1977), Image of the Beast (1980), The Zoo Gang (1985), Bad Jim (1989), Rescue Me (1993) and The Back-Up Bride (2011), his last. Actress Andra Martin was the second of his eight wives. He had seven children.
