Shirley Knight

Actress

Born - 5 July 1936, Goessel, Kansas, USA
Died - 22 April 2020

Ethereal, full-faced, slender blonde American actress who continually sought the intelligent roles for which she seemed suited, but had a less than satisfactory screen career, possibly because of her outspoken criticism of Hollywood filmmakers after she had twice been nominated for Academy Awards, in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960) and Sweet Bird of Youth (1962). She remained a top supporting actress rather than a marquee-name star. She was on stage and in TV and films, all before the age of 20: Picnic (1955), Five Gates to Hell (1959), Ice Palace (1960), House of Women (1961), Flight from Ashiya (1963), The Group (1966), Petulia (1968), The Rain People (1969), Secrets (1971), Juggernaut (1974), 21 Hours at Munich (1976), Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979). Endless Love (1981), Prisoners (1983), The Gravity of Stars (1991), Color of Night (1994), Stuart Saves His Family (1995), Diabolique (1996), As Good As It Gets (1997), A House on a Hill (2001), Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002), Sexual Life (2004), Open Window (2006), The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009), Our Idiot Brother (2011), Redwood Highway (2013), Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 (2015), Periphery (2017), her last, and many more. Married (second) to British dramatist John Hopkins - she was billed for a while in the 1970s as Shirley Knight Hopkins - she died 'from natural causes.'
