Blond-haired, waif-like child star who, when his adult acting career failed to take off, became a spectacularly successful producer-director of TV comedy shows. The son of equally successful screenwriter Jack Davies, he rocketed into the limelight as Oliver Twist (1948), subsequently appearing in The Rocking Horse Winner (1949), Tom Brown's Schooldays (1950) and The Magic Box (1951). Some of his many TV shows from 1968 onwards included Beachcomber, Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Goodies, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, The Good Life, All Gas and Gaiters, Mr Bean, No Job for a Lady, After Henry and Law and Disorder. He died from cancer.
