Narrow-faced, dark-haired, ascetic-looking English actor, sometimes in menacing roles - thus a formidable Mephistopheles on stage and as a satanic headmaster on TV. After stage experience, he entered TV in 1965, films a little later: Running Scared (1972), Pope Joan (1972), I'll Think About It (1975), Loophole (1981), Gandhi (1982), Sahara (1983), God's Outlaw (1986), Mask of Murder (1988), Demon in My View (1991), Detonator (1993), Distant Shadow (2000), Fishtales (2007), Mr Turner (2014) and En Sommer in Oxford (2018), his last. Married to actress Rowena Cooper for nearly 60 years, he died from natural causes.
