Long-headed, small-mouthed, rosy-cheeked, faintly lugubrious and latterly bearded English actor with a slight resemblance to another Bernard (Cribbins). Perhaps best remembered for playing the Captain in Titanic (1997) and Josser in TV's Boys from the Black Stuff, his many film credits include Trial by Combat (1976), It Could Happen to You (1976), The Sailor's Return (1978), Gandhi (1982), Runners (1983), The Bounty (1984), Restless Natives (1985), Bellman and True (1987), Drowning by Numbers (1988), Shirley Valentine (1989), Mountains of the Moon (1990), Double X: The Name of the Game (1992), The Ghost and the Darkness (1996),True Crime (1999), A Question of Faith (2000), The Scorpion King (2002), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), Wimbledon (2004), The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2005), Joy Division (2006), Exodus (2006), Franklyn (2007), Valkyrie (2008), The Kid (2010), Shepherd on the Rock (2014), Golden Years (2016), Second Chance (2018), Forever Young (2022) and The Moor (2023), his last.
