Andy Griffith

Actor

Born - 7 June 1926, Mount Airy, North Carolina, USA
Died - 3 July 2012

Plump-cheeked American entertainer with dark, tufty hair, originally a comic monologuist and in some ways the natural successor to Will Rogers. After success on Broadway, he made a starring film debut in A Face in the Crowd (1957) as the power-hungry hillbilly singer who becomes a national figure. The rest of his starring roles were in lighter vein: a reprise of his Broadway hit in No Time for Sergeants (1958), Onionhead (1959) and The Second Time Around (1961). He then enjoyed enormous popularity on TV as a kindly, homespun sheriff in The Andy Griffith Show, which ran until 1968. His only other notable TV success came two decades later as the wily lawyer Matlock. And there were a few more films: Angel in My Pocket (1969), Hollywood Cowboy/Hearts of the West (1975), Rustlers' Rhapsody (1985), Spy Hard (1996), Daddy and Them (2001), Waitress (2007) and Play the Game (2009), his last. He died from a heart attack.
