Bearded, genial American director, much associated with playwright Neil Simon, several of whose works he brought to the screen. A actor from 1951, he later directed a string of movie hits: Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Odd Couple (1968), Cactus Flower (1969), Last of the Red Hot Lovers (1972), Mame (1974), Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986) and A Fine Romance (1992). His last work as director was a TV movie version of the musical Bye Bye Birdie in 1995. His acting credits included A Thousand Clowns (1964), The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1975), The One and Only (1978), Lovesick (1983), Nobody's Fool (1994) and Deconstructing Harry (1997), his last. The first of his two wives was actress Bea Arthur. He died from pneumonia.
