Adele Mara

Actress

Born - 28 April 1923, Highland Park, Michigan, USA
Died - 7 May 2010

Lithe, sultry, brown-eyed blonde of Spanish-American parentage who was already singing (then still a brunette) with Xavier Cugat and his Orchestra at 15. Signed and wasted by Columbia, Mara (born Adelaida Delgado) made her debut in Navy Blues (1941), but had more success when she moved to Republic two years later, at first as the heroine of 'B' westerns with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, but later as a bona-fide leading lady of the late 1940s, notably opposite John Wayne in Wake of the Red Witch (1948) and Sands of Iwo Jima (1949). Other films included Alias Boston Blackie (1942), Reveille with Beverly (1943), The Fighting Seabees (1944, again with Wayne), Flame of Barbary Coast (1945), The Magnificent Rogue (1947), Angel in Exile (1948), The Avengers (1950), The Sea Hornet (1951), Every Minute Counts (1953), Back from Eternity (1956) and The Big Circus (1959), her last, although she continued to appear in TV series made by her second husband, writer-producer Roy Huggins, until 1962.
