Lanky, laconic, lugubrious, languid, toothily unconventional Canadian actor with floppy hair and distinctive drawling voice. Although his highest profile came in such early 1970s' films as M*A*S*H (1970) and Don't Look Now (1973), he's best known to younger viewers as the duplicitous President Snow in the 'Hunger Games' films. After beginnings on UK TV from the early 1960s, he made close to 200 film appearances, including those in The World Ten Times Over (1963), Doctor Terror's House of Horrors (1964), The Bedford Incident (1965), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Billion Dollar Brain (1967), The Split (1968), Start the Revolution Without Me (1969), Kelly's Heroes (1970), Klute (1971), Steelyard Blues (1972), The Day of the Locust 1974), The Eagle Has Landed (1976), Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1978), Ordinary People (1980), Eye of the Needle (1981), Max Dugan Returns (1983), Revolution (1985), A Dry White Season (1989), Lock Up (1989), Backdraft (1991), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Disclosure (1994), A Time to Kill (1996), Fallen (1997), Virus (1998), Space Cowboys (2000), Cold Mountain (2003), Pride & Prejudice (2005), Fool's Gold (2008), The Mechanic (2011), Horrible Bosses (2011), The Hunger Games (2012, and sequels), The Best Offer (2013), Forsaken (2015), The Leisure Seeker (2017), American Hangman (2019), Mr Harrigan's Phone (2022) and Miranda's Victim (2023), his last. Three times married, latterly to French-Canadian actress Francine Racette, his five children include the actor Kiefer Sutherland. He received an honorary Academy Award in 2017.
