Slightly sad-looking Australian-born director, a distinguished man of the UK theatre, who also made a few films, and began life as an actor before joining a Scottish theatre group in the mid 1960s: The Captain's Table (1958), Operation Amsterdam (1958), The Heart of a Man (1959), Catch Us If You Can (1965) and Country Life (1994). He also directed the films Hefeber (1979), A Personal History of the Australian Surf (1981), Privates on Parade (1983), Country Life (1994) and Blithe Spirit (2014). But it's for his theatre work he'll be remembered, including a record-making double Tony award in 2000
