Valentina Cortese

Actress

Born - 1 January 1923, Milan, Italy
Died - 10 July 2019

Dark-haired, serious-looking Italian actress of slightly matronly attractiveness and poignant appeal in emotive drama. She had a not altogether happy period in Hollywood (and the UK) in the 1950s, before returning to the Continent, and eventually winning an Oscar nomination for her performance in Truffaut's Day for Night (1972). On screen at 18, she was in just over 100 films: First Love (1941), Girl of the Golden West (1942), Rome Open City (1946), a dual role in Les Miserables (1947), The Glass Mountain (1948), Black Magic (1949), East of the Rising Sun/Malaya (1949), Shadow of the Eagle (1950), The House on Telegraph Hill (1951), Secret People (1951), Lulu (1952), Angels of Darkness (1953), The Barefoot Contessa (1954), Magic Fire (1955), Rocket from Calabuch (1956), Love and Troubles (1959), Square of Violence (1961), Evil Eye (1962), The Visit (1964), Juliet of the Spirits (1965), Black Sun (1966), The Legend of Lylah Clare (1968), The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969), Madly (1970), Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972), Appassionata (1974), The Big Operator (1976), When Time Ran Out... (1980), La Ferdinanda (1982), Blue Tango (1987), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), Buster's Bedroom (1991) and Sparrow (1993), her last. Divorced after nine years from American actor Richard Basehart, her only marriage, her surname was usually billed as Cortesa in her Hollywood days and in international ventures.
