Warm and sympathetic American actress whose dark-haired, full-cheeked beauty turned motherly as she entered her mid thirties and took on her iconic role - Della Street, Perry Mason's girl Friday, in nearly 300 TV episodes and 30 subsequent TV movies. A solid performer with cheerful, friendly manner, she entered films via the modelling route, before playing 'B' movie heroines for RKO-Radio in the mid forties, progressing to higher-grade leading roles by the end of the decade. Many film appearances include those in The Iron Major (1942), Higher and Higher (1943), The Falcon in Hollywood (1944), West of the Pecos (1945), Lady Luck (1946), A Likely Story (1947), The Boy With Green Hair (1948), The Window (1949), Jolson Sings Again (1949), The Jackpot (1950), Lorna Doone (1951), The Sabre and the Arrow/Last of the Comanches (1952), Seminole (1953), The Far Horizons (1955), Unchained (1955), 7th Cavalry (1956), The Oklahoman (1957) and Desert Hell (1958). After the original Perry Mason series had finished, she made Buckskin (1968), Airport (1969), Men of the Tenth (1971), The Giant Spider Invasion (1975) and Big Wednesday (1978). Her last work was the Perry Mason TV feature The Case of the Jealous Jokester in 1995. She was married to actor Bill Williams for 46 years until his death in 1992: actor William Katt is their son. She died from chronic obstructive lung disease.
