Anthony Bate

Born - 31 August 1927, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, England
Died - 19 June 2012

Smooth, solidly-built, dark-haired, large-headed English actor. Endowed with striking pale blue eyes, he often played shady, commanding, often humourless upper-class characters on either side of the law. Filmwise, there was the odd leading role in 'B' movies, but he largely settled into effective character roles, and was much seen in TV drama; comedy roles were rare. On stage from 1953, he made his film debut in High Tide at Noon (1957), later movie appearances including Desert Mice (1959), The Big Day (1960), Payroll (1961), A Prize of Arms (1962), The Set Up (1963), Act of Murder (1964) and Davy Jones' Locker (1966), then a huge amount of TV work before Ghost Story (1974), as Kim Philby in the TV movie success Philby, Burgess and Maclean (1977), Give My Regards to Broad Street (1984), Eminent Domain (1990), Happy Now (2000) and the Oscar-winning Nowhere in Africa (2002), his last.
