Clive Donner

Director

Born - 21 January 1926, London, England
Died - 6 September 2010

British director, a former editor on such hits as Scrooge (1951) and Genevieve (1953), Donner enjoyed early directorial success in films prominently featuring children - The Secret Place (1956) and Heart of a Child (1958). His best period was the 1960s, with films often built around 'swinging' London: The Sinister Man (1961), Some People (1962), The Caretaker (1963), Nothing But the Best (1964, perhaps his best film), What's New Pussycat? (1965) and Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (1967). After the failure of Alfred the Great (1969), he was not the same force. Later work included Vampira (1974), the TV film Rogue Male (1976), Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen (1980), Oliver Twist (1982) and Stealing Heaven (1988), his last cinema film. In his later years, there was a great amount of feature length work for TV, including an excellent 'mini-series' version of The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1982. Throughout his career, he proved himself a master of keyed colour work. He died from Alzheimer's Disease. His wife, Australian-born costume designer Jocelyn Rickards, died in 2005.
