Jon Finch

Actor

Born - 2 March 1941, Caterham, Surrey, UK
Died - 28 December 2012

Tall, dark, brooding, boyishly handsome leading man prominent in the early 1970s, but a peripheral figure thereafter. After amateur theatre experience, he worked on stage and on TV from 1964, before getting a foothold on leading film roles with two Hammer horrors, The Vampire Lovers and The Horror of Frankenstein (both 1970). After Roman Polanski chose him as a youthful Macbeth (1971), his stock soared, and he starred for Hitchcock in Frenzy (1972). There were further leading roles in Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971), Lady Caroline Lamb (1972) and The Final Programme (1973), but thereafter his film career inexplicably declined: Diagnosis: Murder (1974), Une Femme Fidele (1976), Death on the Nile (1978), Breaking Glass (1980), Giro City (1982), Pop Pirates (1984), Strange (1987), Streets of Yesterday (1988), Merlin of the Crystal Cave (1991), Lurking Fear (1994), Darklands (1998), Anazapta (2003) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005), his last. Once married to actress Catriona MacColl, he suffered much in his latter years from diabetes.
