Stephen Dwoskin

Director-writer-designer

Born - 15 January 1939, New York City, USA
Died - 28 June 2012

Disabled, avant-garde director of handheld, in-your-face, one-of-a-kind movies that remained resolutely a long way from the mainstream, but proved popular with highbrow magazines and selective arthouses. Crippled by polio at nine, Dwoskin spent most of life on crutches or in a wheelchair. Even so, he proved a prolific film-maker, turning out 36 shorts and feature films between 1961 and 2008. Sometimes the films mixed documentary with fiction, or abstract images with reality. A few of the titles were American Dream (1961), Alone (1964), Times For (1970), Dyn Amo (1973), Central Bazaar (1976), Silent Cry (1977), Outside In (1981), Ballet Black (1986), Face of Our Fear (1991), Trying to Kiss the Moon (1994), By My Illness (2001), Oblivion (2006) and The Sun and the Moon (2008). His final film, Age Is... (2012) is yet to be shown at time of writing. He died from heart failure.
