Danny Aiello

Actor

Born - 20 June 1933, New York City, USA
Died - 12 December 2019

Thick-set, dark-haired Italianate New Yorker with pugnacious, full-faced features that could be friendly or threatening according to the role. Mainly seen in tough, down-to-earth or working-class roles, he followed long Broadway experience with a low-key entry into films at 40. Better roles took a while to come, but he had made his bulky presence felt by the 1980s, and was nominated for an Oscar towards the end of the decade for Do the Right Thing. His biggest role came at the age of 58, with the title role in Ruby, the story of the man who killed Lee Harvey Oswald. Nearly 100 film appearances included those in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), The Godfather Part II (1974), The Front (1976), Fingers (1977), Bloodbrothers (1978), Defiance (1979), Hide in Plain Sight (1980), Fort Apache The Bronx (1981), Once Upon a Time in America (1983) and many more, including his last, One Moment (2020). He died after being admitted to hospital with a chest infection. Sandy, his wife of almost 65 years, survives him.
