Gene Deitch

Animation director

Born - 8 August 1924, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Died - 15 April 2020

Bespectacled, balding director of short Hollywood cartoons, who worked for Terrytoons and UPA before moving to Czechoslovakia in 1959, where he made all the later Tom and Jerry and Popeye cartoons. He began as a graphic artist with the American aviation industry, but joined the film business in the 1950s. He won an Oscar for his work on Munro (1960), voted best animated short of the year. He made more than 100 cartoons in all, ranging from Wings for Roger Windsock (1947), his first, through Howdy Doody and His Magic Hat (1954), Switchin' Kitten (1960), The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit (1962), The Foolish Frog (1971), Where the Wild Things Are (1975), The Hat (1982) and The Emperor's New Clothes (1990), all the way to Diary of a Worm (2005), his last. His three sons and his (second) wife Zdenka have all worked in the animation industry: all survive him. He died from intestinal problems.
