Yvonne Furneaux

Actress

Born - 11 May 1926, Roubaix, France
Died - 5 July 2024

French-born leading lady of English parentage, born Yvonne Scatcherd (Furneaux was her mother's maiden name). When she won a place at Oxford University, the family moved to England, where she later began an acting career. Her dark-haired, green-eyed, dusky looks clearly qualified her for sirens of Baghdad and beyond, and UK films largely wasted her in admittedly prominent supporting roles. After 1959, she moved to Italy, where she made a good start in La Dolce Vita (1959) but was soon confined to costume action: 24 Hours in a Woman's Life (1952), The Master of Ballantrae (1953), The House of the Arrow (1953), The Dark Avenger (1955), Lisbon (1956), Carta al Cielo (1958), The Mummy (1959), The Count of Monte-Cristo (1961), Charge of the Black Lancers (1961), Slave Queen of Babylon (1962), Enough Rope (1963), The Lion of Thebes (1964), Repulsion (1964), Le Scandale/The Champagne Murders (1966), In Nome del Popolo Italiano (1971), Versuchung im Sommerwind (1973) and Frankenstein's Great Aunt Tillie (1983), her last. Her husband, cinematographer Jacques Natteau, died in 2007.
