Chunky, plump-faced character player with light, curly hair, a skilled portrayer of earthy, working-class types who became famous in his later years playing dozy Eddie Yeats for a decade in the TV soap Coronation Street. He made his movie debut in Smashing Time (1967), subsequent film work including The Bofors Gun (1968), The Virgin Soldiers (1969), The Man Who Had Power Over Women (1970), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Tiffany Jones (1973), Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1974), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (1976) and Nijinsky (1980), before his time became totally consumed by TV work: other small-screen series in which he appeared include Heartbeat, The Royle Family and Keeping Up Appearances.
