Pouch-cheeked, balding, toothy English actor, equally at home in comedy and drama. Divided his time between TV and the theatre, with a few films dotted in between: Catch Us If You Can (1965), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968), Frenzy (1972), The National Health (1973), Man at the Top (1973), The Sailor's Return (1978), Excalibur (1981), A Passage to India (1984), Pack of Lies (1987), Young Toscanini (1988), Gaston's War (1997) and Vacuums (2003), his last, although he continued to perform in other media until 2017. He married the writer Margaret Drabble, but the marriage ended in divorce after 15 years. He died from chronic obstructive lung disease.
