Michael/Michel Lonsdale

Actor

Born - 24 May 1931, Paris, France
Died - 21 September 2020

Sturdy, dark-haired actor of sternly cherubic features, piercing gaze, chubby build and no apparent neck. Often moustachioed and bearded, and born Michael Lonsdale-Crouch of Anglo-French parentage, his early years were spent in both England and Morocco, before returning to France, where he began acting on radio, before making a film debut there in C'est Arrive a Aden (1956). His command of both English and French enabled him to appear in international films, billed either Michel or Michael, before he leapt to greater prominence hunting Edward Fox's assassin in The Day of the Jackal in 1973. Scores of film appearances, frequently in sinister roles, include those in La Main Chaude (1959), The Trial (1962), Behold a Pale Horse (1964), Hail! Mafia (1965), The Bride Wore Black (1967), Stolen Kisses (1968), Le Souffle au Coeur/Dearest Love (1971), The Phantom of Liberty (1974), The Romantic Englishwoman (1975), Mr Klein (1976), The Left-Handed Woman (1977), The Passage (1978), Moonraker (1979), Chariots of Fire (1981), Enigma (1982), The Holcroft Covenant (1985), The Name of the Rose (1986), Souvenir (1987), The Madonna Man (1988), Ma Vie est un Enfer (1991), The Remains of the Day (1993), Jefferson in Paris (1995), Ronin (1998), Les Acteurs (2000), The Mystery of the Yellow Room (2003), Bye Bye Blackbird (2004), Munich (2005), Goya's Ghosts (2006), Agora (2009), Of Gods and Men (2010), Le Renard Jaune (2013) and Les Premiers, les Derniers (2016), his last. He also wrote a number of novels.
