Michael Anderson

Director

Born - 30 January 1920, Camberwell, London, England
Died - 25 April 2018

Light-haired British director of boyish handsomeness who, like his similarly-long-lived colleague Lewis Gilbert, who died earlier this year, marched in the vanguard of British post-war cinema, his biggest hit undoubtedly being The Dam Busters (1954), made in the middle of his most fruitful period, when he also displayed a talent for mystery and suspense. He had begun as a teenage actor, but soon expressed a preference for direction, working as an assistant director until 1949. After co-directing Private Angelo in that year, he made Waterfront (1950), Hell is Sold Out (1951), Will Any Gentleman...? (1953), The House of the Arrow (1953), 1984 (1955), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), Yangtse Incident (1957), Chase a Crooked Shadow (1958), Shake Hands With the Devil (1959), The Naked Edge (1961), Wild and Wonderful (1963), Operation Crossbow (1965), The Quiller Memorandum (1966), and The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968), after which the quality of his output declined, although he had another box-office hit with Logan's Run in 1976. Latterly resident in Canada, his son is the one-time actor Michael Anderson Jr. He died from natural causes.
