Tall, charismatic, blue-eyed, fair-haired leading actor with low, dry voice, initially cast as visionaries, but later as more conventional heroes or even philanderers, often with a certain quirkiness. Notable as one of the 'hell-raising' group of British and Irish actors that included Richard Burton, Oliver Reed and Richard Harris, he was nominated eight times for an Oscar without winning, though he was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2003. Married/divorced actress Sian Phillips, he survived a stomach cancer scare in the 1970s to outlive most of his fellow roisterers. After a debut in The Savage Innocents (1959), he shot to fame as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), following it with Becket (1963), Lord Jim (1964), How to Steal a Million (1966), The Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr Chips (1969), Murphy's War (1970), Man of La Mancha (1972), Rosebud (1974), Zulu Dawn (1979), My Favorite Year (1982), Supergirl (1984), The Last Emperor (1987), King Ralph (1991), Phantoms (1998), Bright Young Things (2003), Venus (2006), Dean Spanley (2008), Eager to Die (2010) and Katherine of Alexandria (2014), his last.
