Charles Durning

Actor

Born - 28 February 1923, Highland Falls, New York, USA
Died - 24 December 2012

Burly, not-too-tall character star with lived-in face and small blinky eyes who took up acting late in life after a variety of other occupations but, after early struggles, made up for lost time by becoming one of filmland's most familiar and likeable faces, notching up two Oscar nominations in a career that included some of the major films of his era. The son of an Army officer, and distinguished, decorated veteran of the Korean War, Durning tried work as boxer, bouncer, liftman, ballroom dancing instructor, cabbie, waiter and construction worker before settling on acting as career, and getting TV work from 1953. He made his movie debut in a British film, The Password is Courage (1962) and gradually came to the fore: Harvey Middleman, Fireman (1965), I Walk the Line (1968), The Sting (1973), The Front Page (1974), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), The Choirboys (1977), North Dallas Forty (1979), True Confessions (1981), Tootsie (1982), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Tough Guys (1986), Cop (1987), Dick Tracy (1990), The Hudsucker Proxy (1993), The Grass Harp (1995), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), The Last Man Club (2002), River's End (2005), Deal (2008), The Waiter (2010) and Rogue Assassin (2012). He racked up more than 200 credits in films and TV and was working on Scavenger Killers (2013) at the time of his death from natural causes.
