Victor Spinetti

Actor

Born - 2 September 1929, Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, Wales
Died - 18 June 2012

Eccentric Welsh actor with pained expression and halo of dark, fuzzy hair which disappeared as the years went by. Notable for comic cameos as flapping, arm-waving, often sarcastic characters in the Franklin Pangborn tradition, and a great friend of The Beatles, in both of whose major films he appeared. Movies for the actor (born Vittorio Spinetti), are fewer than one remembers, but included Behind the Mask (1958), Sparrows Can't Sing (1962), Becket (1963), A Hard Day's Night (1964), Help! (1965), The Taming of the Shrew (1966), Start the Revolution Without Me (1969), Under Milk Wood (1971), Return of the Pink Panther (1974), Voyage of the Damned (1976), Hardcore (1977), Under the Cherry Moon (1986), The Krays (1990), Julie and the Cadillacs (1997) and the short film Wednesday (2006), his last. Spinetti, who also directed plays for the National Theatre, died from prostate cancer, his partner of 44 years, actor Graham Curnow, having pre-deceased him in 1997.
