(Dame) Angela Lansbury

Actress

Born - 16 October 1925, Regents Park, London, England
Died - 11 October 2022

Fair-haired, British-born Hollywood actress and singer. In America from 1940, she always seemed several years older than her real age (until she neared her forties) and her petulant prettiness was an invitation to producers to often cast her in spiteful or bitchy roles. But she took Broadway by storm in 1966 in the musical Mame, and thereafter commanded a better range of parts. Later she played spinster detectives with great success especially as Jessica Fletcher in the long-running sleuthing series Murder, She Wrote on TV. Three times nominated for an Academy Award, she was finally given an honorary Oscar in 2013. Many film appearances include those in Gaslight (1944), National Velvet (1944), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), The Hoodlum Saint (1946), The Private Affairs of Bel Ami (1947), The Three Musketeers (1948), Samson and Delilah (1949), Mutiny (1951), Remains to Be Seen (1953), The Court Jester (1955), Please Murder Me (1956), The Long Hot Summer (1958), Summer of the 17th Doll (1960), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The World of Henry Orient (1964), Harlow (1965), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), Death on the Nile (1978), The Lady Vanishes (1979), The Mirror Crack'd (1980), The Pirates of Penzance (1982), The Company of Wolves (1984), JFK (1991), Nanny McPhee (2005), Mr Popper's Penguins (2011), Mary Poppins Returns (2018) and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), her last. Created Dame in 2014. Actor Richard Cromwell was the first of her two husbands. Five days away from her 97th birthday, she died in her sleep.
