Stoutly built, moustachioed Welsh character actor with thick brown hair. After a start in British films, he went to Hollywood in the early 1960s and played officers, doctors (he was a harrumphing Watson in a TV movie version of The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1972) lovable eccentrics and other patrician types. Born Bernard Lawson into an acting family (his father was Gerald Lawson and his uncle Wilfrid Lawson; the original family name was Worsnop), his films included Home and Away (1956), Soho Incident (1956), Blue Murder at St Trinian's (1957), A Night to Remember (1958), Captured (1959), The Longest Day (1962), The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), Honeymoon Hotel (1964), Strange Bedfellows (1965), Munster, Go Home! (1966), Star! (1968), The Million Dollar Duck (1971), Arnold (1973), Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977), The Private Eyes (1980), Yellowbeard (1983), 18 Again! (1988), Titanic (1997) and The Mummy (1999), his last. He died from a heart attack.
